The Clinical Effect of Vigabatrin in Refractory Pediatric Epilepsies.




Abstract
The antiepileptic effect of vigabatrin in the children with refractory epilepsies has been investigated only to a limited extent. In order to assess the efficacy and safety of vigabatrin, 44 children with refractory epilepsies have been treated
with
vigabatrin in open, add-on studies. The mean duration of the administration was 9 months, and the mean dosage was 73.6mg/kg/day. The results were as follows; seizure free in 18.2% of the cases, 50-99% frequency reduction in 29.5%, and <50%
frequency
reduction or no change in 52.3% The efficacy of vigabatrin was rated as 47.7%. The adverse effects were observed in 5 cases which were drowsiness, diplopia and nausea. In all cases, however, the administration of vigabatrin could be continded.
